About the World War II Veterans Memorial Travel Fund
On May 29, 2004, in Washington, D.C., almost 60 years after the end of World War II, the nation will dedicate a memorial to those who served in that war. Eagle Cap Post No. 4307 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars intends to send Wallowa County WWII veterans and their wives, and widows of veterans to Washington to participate in that celebration.

Wallowa County has a proud record of contribution in defense of our nation. In World War I, the cream of our youth shipped "over there" in answer to the country's call to arms. And in the 1940's, just as their fathers and uncles before them, young men and women of Wallowa County found themselves in strange lands fighting for people they had previously only known about from geography lessons. Leaving behind family and friends, these brave young men and women willingly risked their lives to defend the world from the threat of fascism.

At home the entire nation was mobilized to fight or support those who fought. Mothers, fathers, and young wives worked to keep ranches and homes afloat while sons and husbands fought in Europe and Asia. Some of these young men never returned; those that did often bore memories and scars for the rest of their lives. Wallowa County veterans were there at Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, on the beaches of Guadalcanal, flying "over the hump" to China, the occupation of Japan, as well as countless other, unnamed places of danger, disease, and loneliness. Regardless of where or how they served, we consider each and every World War II veteran to be a hero. They all deserve our gratitude and respect.

Many of our beloved World War II veterans have passed on. Those who remain are in their late seventies or eighties. It is fitting that those who are able should have the opportunity to participate in the national celebration in their honor. We intend, with your help, to send as many of our Wallowa County WWII veterans, spouses, or widows as we can to take part in the dedication of the World War II Memorial. Accordingly, all proceeds from the sale of this limited edition art print will go to the World War II Veterans Memorial Travel Fund to help send our members of the "greatest generation" to the ceremonies.
